Mountain Lakes started in 1908, when Herbert Hapgood began buying land to build a planned community in the woods. By 1923 he had put up hundreds of stucco houses influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, some drawn from Gustav Stickley's published Craftsman designs, with deep overhanging eaves, boulderstone, and porches meant for living outdoors. The borough's chain of small lakes, among them Birchwood, Crystal, Sunset, and Mountain, sits under oaks planted as the neighborhood filled in. The historic district went on the National Register in 2005.
