Allendale takes its name from Joseph Warner Allen, the Erie Railroad surveyor behind the line that reached town in 1848, and the borough grew outward from the depot as farmland was sold off and subdivided. The 107-acre Celery Farm, a freshwater wetland preserve off Franklin Turnpike where more than 240 bird species have been recorded, is what is left of the produce farms that came first.
